What auto hauler insurance covers

Auto haulers are not standard trucking risks. The cargo on the deck is worth far more than freight, the loading and unloading exposure is unique, and most general trucking carriers either decline or surcharge heavily.

We write open trailer haulers running 7 to 10 cars and enclosed haulers running fewer, higher-value units. Owner-operators, small fleets, and dealer-transport operations. The four coverages that actually matter: primary liability, physical damage, motor truck cargo with the right limit per vehicle, and on-hook coverage if you ever pick up a wrecked or non-running unit.

Cargo limits matter more here than almost anywhere else in trucking. A single Tesla or sprinter van on the deck can use up a $250,000 cargo limit by itself. Carriers underwrite the per-vehicle and per-load limit carefully, and so do we.

What's included

Coverage types we write

  • Primary liability

FMCSR-mandated bodily injury and property damage. $1M is the operating standard for shipper paperwork.

  • Physical damage

Tractor and trailer. Auto haulers tend to carry higher physical-damage limits because the trailer alone can be six figures.

  • Motor truck cargo

The vehicles on the deck. Per-vehicle limit, per-load limit, and exclusions for unattended trailer theft are the three things to read closely.

  • On-hook / wrecker coverage

For non-running, wrecked, or otherwise damaged vehicles you pick up. Standard cargo policies typically exclude these.

  • Garage keepers

Vehicles in your care, custody, and control while parked at your yard or staging lot.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between cargo coverage and on-hook coverage?

Cargo coverage applies to running, drivable vehicles loaded for transport. On-hook applies when you tow a wrecked, non-running, or otherwise impaired vehicle. Most cargo policies exclude the second scenario, which is why on-hook is a separate line.

How much cargo coverage do I need?

Math the worst-case load. Seven cars at $40,000 each is $280,000. One Tesla Model X on the deck plus six other units can be more. We size the per-vehicle and per-load limits to the actual mix you haul.

Are open and enclosed haulers rated differently?

Yes. Enclosed haulers carry higher-value cargo and physical-damage rates, but the loss frequency is lower. Open haulers see more weather and rock-chip claims. Carriers price them as different risks.

Will my policy cover a vehicle that was damaged loading or unloading?

It depends on the policy form. Some cargo policies exclude loading and unloading; some include it; some require an endorsement. We read the form, not just the declarations page.

Do you write dealer-transport operations?

Yes. Dealer-transport, auction-pull, and inter-dealer trades are common risks for our auto-hauler clients. Each has slightly different cargo and on-hook needs.
