What motorcycle insurance covers
Motorcycle insurance in Pennsylvania has a few wrinkles that car insurance doesn't. The state's tort law treats motorcyclists differently. Helmet rules apply to riders under 21 and to those without two years of experience or a safety course. Premiums vary widely by bike type — a sport bike, a cruiser, and a touring bike are three different rate classes.
We write owner-rider policies and sell add-ons that matter: accessory coverage for aftermarket parts, transport trailer coverage, and total-loss replacement on new bikes. Most carriers offer roadside assistance bundled or as an inexpensive rider.
Lay-up policies (storage-only during winter) are available with most carriers. If your bike sleeps from November to March, ask about a lay-up rider — it can cut the premium by a third.

Coverage types we write
-
Liability
Bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. Pennsylvania's 15/30/5 minimums apply.
-
Collision
Repairs to your bike after a wreck. Optional unless financed.
-
Comprehensive
Theft, fire, vandalism, deer collision. Bikes get stolen more than cars per registered unit.
-
Uninsured / underinsured motorist
Pays your medical and lost-wages bills if the other driver has nothing. Worth carrying high in PA.
-
Accessory coverage
Aftermarket exhaust, paint, saddlebags, and electronics. Standard policy limits are usually low — ask about a rider.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need motorcycle insurance in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Pennsylvania requires the same 15/30/5 liability and $5,000 first-party medical benefits on registered motorcycles as it does on cars. Most riders carry above the minimum because medical bills from a motorcycle wreck go big quickly.
Will a sport bike cost more to insure than a cruiser?
Usually yes. Sport bikes correlate with higher claim frequency and higher claim severity in carrier loss data, so most carriers price them as a higher risk class.
What is a lay-up policy?
Reduced coverage for the months your bike is in storage. Liability typically drops; comprehensive (theft, fire) stays in force. The savings can be a third of the annual premium for riders who store from late fall to early spring.
Are aftermarket parts covered?
Most policies include a small accessory limit (often $1,000 to $3,000) that doesn't cover much beyond a saddlebag set. If you've put real money into the bike, ask about an accessory rider with a higher limit.
Can I add a passenger to my coverage?
Liability coverage applies to passengers automatically. Med-pay or first-party medical benefits on the bike usually extends to passengers. Worth confirming the limit covers the worst-case ER trip for two riders.
